The Basics of Hearing Aids

Hearing impaired products like hearing aids can help people with hearing disabilities cope with their problems and live a normal life. However, according to the fact sheet distributed by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, only one among five persons who may be in need of a hearing aid is actually wearing one. If you are suffering from hearing problems then you may need hearing impaired products like a hearing aid. It would be best to have yourself checked by an ear specialist or an audiologist to determine your hearing problem or if you will need a hearing aid.

* What is a Hearing Aid?

A hearing aid is one of several hearing impaired products that help people with hearing disabilities hear sounds more audibly. A hearing aid is an electronic device that is fitted inside or behind the ear. It receives sound from the environment and converts them to electrical pulses. An amplifier magnifies these signals and sends them to the inner ear through miniature speakers.

* How Hearing Aids Help People

Hearing aids are useful hearing impaired products that helps improve the hearing ability of people with hearing loss. Depending on the results of tests conducted by an audiologist, the type of hearing aid you need can be determined, as well as whether you need one set or would need devices for both ears. Paired hearing aids may be more helpful to provide balance and better noise reduction.

* How to Adjust to a Hearing Aid

When people receive a hearing aid for the first time, they would need some time to adjust to the instrument. This is a gradual process and may involve constants use in different environments and sources of sounds. Some people experience their voices to be too loud the first time they wear hearing aids, but will get used to it over time. If a whistling sound or feedback is heard, the fit may have some problems or fluid and earwax buildup have occurred. In such cases, the best action is to have your ears checked by an audiologist.

* The Types of Hearing Aids

The circuitry inside a hearing aid may differ even among hearing impaired products with the same style. There are three types of hearing aids according to circuitry.

Analog-Adjustable: This type is the least expensive. The audiologist determines specifications and a laboratory builds the device. Some adjustments can still be made by the audiologist after construction.

Analog-Programmable: For this type, a computer is used to adjust the hearing aid. More than one program or settings can be made, and can be used depending on the environment where the hearing aid is used.

Digital-Programmable: This is the most expensive type. Adjustments can be made through the computer, including sound quality and response time. Some later versions of this type are auto-programming depending on the environment where the user is located.

Hearing aids have gone a long way in improving the quality of life for people with hearing disabilities. Hearing impaired products like hearing aids are useful tools that help these people live normal lives.

Industrial accidents are not uncommon. There are many people who meet with accidents. Unsafe working environment, faulty machinery and equipments, improper safety measures for workers lead to accidents. Any person who has suffered an injury due to the negligence of the employer can make a claim. A claimant must be able to prove that the injury has resulted due to the negligence of the other person or the employer. This will strengthen the case.

Industrial deafness can cause serious injuries to ear. As a victim of industrial deafness, you can opt for deafness compensation claims. You can also get expert advice form a team of deafness claims solicitors. These claims will help a person making a claim get compensation quickly. Industrial deafness hearing loss compensation can help get suitable compensation for the losses suffered.

This type of claim is specifically meant for those who are suffering from hearing loss due to excessive industrial noise. An industrial deafness compensation lawyer too can also help a claimant make a claim for industrial deafness. The lawyers will take upon the case and guide to get to get compensation quickly. They will guide the claimant through the entire process and let him or her know how good the chances of getting compensation are. Deafness Claims are not uncommon. Any person, who has suffered industrial deafness, can make a claim. It is the legal and civil rights of the claimant to make a claim for the losses suffered due to the negligence of someone. Right after the incident, a claimant must get in touch with an industrial deafness claims solicitor. They can help a claimant get compensation quickly. Besides, this they will also calculate your personal injury claim.

It is true that deterioration of hearing is a natural part of getting old, and everybody suffers some degree of hearing loss/deafness with age. Hearing loss can also be caused or aggravated by unsafe working conditions, where employers have taken inadequate precautions to protect workers from the damaging effects of noisy environments. Deafness claims experts can help people suffering with hearing loss, get compensation quickly. The specialists are fully qualified and can guide through the claims procedure. They have ample experience in handling industrial injury claims of all types, including industrial diseases and conditions, including deafness, occupational asthma, hand, arm, vibration syndrome and dermatitis etc. Many claimants are unsure of the amount of compensation they can receive. The amount of compensation a claimant can receive depends on two main factors:

Liability for causing your loss

How much your claim is worth

Many claims specialists provide hearing loss compensation. If the employers fail to give adequate protection to the employees, a worker can make a claim.

Ipod Ear Buds Can Cause Tinnitus from Infection Too

Hundreds of millions of people around the world are affected by the facts made clear in recent studies . Listening to one’s Ipod or other personal listening devices have long been known to cause major hearing loss and tinnitus from the exposures to the loud noise when they are used at too high a volume setting. However the new research shows that in addition to this problem is the huge bacterial increase in the inner ears amongst personal sound device users which is cause of inner ear infections.

The earpieces of these personal sound machines are a breeding ground for bacteria and that often leads to painful ear infections,” you don’t have to be an expert to be able to predict this phenomenon.

Physicians have long advised patients especially younger ones that listening to music at high volumes on earphones could lead to hearing loss but now they have proved the earpieces are rife with germs that lead to hearing loss causing infections. These infections can also be spread from user to user when people share the use of these devices.

Harmful bacteria was found on nine out of ten of the ear swabs taken from people who regularly shared their earphones with friends, compared with less than ten per cent of those who shared less frequently or not at all.

The head researcher came to the obvious conclusion that “It is better not to share or else to clean the earphones thoroughly before sharing.”

An additional study which looked into the use of airplane audio headsets, published in the medical journal Laryngoscope, discovered that, after an hour’s use, the number of bacteria increased more than ten fold.

The connection to tinnitus is that ear infections are a major cause of tinnitus according to the tinnitus survey that was conducted among a group of almost two thousand people who suffered from the hearing problem.

Aspartame a Cause of Tinnitus in Some

Today I received the following in an emai lfrom a tinnitus author John Currie I thought I would share it with you:

"If it says ‘Sugar Free’ on the label, is it safe to consume?
Maybe not!

One of my my clients who is a renowned lecturer has sent me the
following message as he believes it to me a major aggravating
factor for tinnitus sufferers!

And you know what - I AGREE with him!

This is an excerpt from his email to me:

During a lecture I said "If you are using Aspartame (artificial
sweeteners) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms,
shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness,
headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety
attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision or memory loss… you
probably have Aspartame poisoning."

People were jumping up during the lecture saying "I have some of
those symptoms. Is it reversible?" Yes, stop drinking diet sodas
and be alert for Aspartame on food labels. Many products are
fortified with it."

On doing further research I was appalled at what I found. I have been
involved with tinnitus research for many years now but even so I was
shocked by my findings.

Please take heed of this message as the side effects of Aspartame
(artificial sweeteners) is affecting you in many ways you would not
imagine.

Look into this Aspartame issue, as it could well be an
aggravating factor in your life, and I am not only talking
about tinnitus!

To your health.

John Currie"

Hearing Loss Causes Are Common

Many things can cause hearing loss and tinnitus, most of which we still cannot do much about - in spite of the advancements in medical technology. However, there are advantages to knowing more about the potential causes of hearing loss, especially as they can help with early detection/diagnosis and possibly minimising the nature of hearing loss eventually recorded. As with most other bodily malfunctions or disorders, early investigation or detection can be useful in tackling a hearing loss problem. This is why hearing specialists often recommend periodic hearing assessments especially for people who are exposed to environments that predispose them to developing this problem.

This article describes some potential causes of hearing loss.

1. Noise Induced Hearing Loss:This can happen due to exposure to a Noisy Work environment - for instance, not using hearing protection in a packaging/bottling hall or manufacturing plant with loud machines operating. Sound levels above 85 decibels qualify to be called "Noise" and have potential to cause hearing loss with prolonged exposure.

A study found that workers in a plant who were exposed to excessive noise (above 85 decibels) and did not routinely use hearing protection tended to develop permanent hearing loss. The same logic applies to prolonged exposure to non-workplace situations (i.e. Noisy Play Environments) in which high noise levels occur e.g. party venues with loud music etc. In the USA, an initiative called "Dangerous Decibels" aimed at sensitizing young people to the potential damage of loud music etc is one that re-enforces the point being made.

2. Tobacco Induced Hearing Loss (TIHL): Not many people are aware of this type of hearing loss. Proposals have been made that cigarette manufacture be outlawed to facilitate the prevention of TIHL. Research studies have shown that people who smoke are more predisposed to developing hearing loss. And the longer they continue smoking, the worse the condition becomes.

A relatively recent study reported in the Journal of the Association for Research into Otolaryngology that "Smoking Reduces Blood Flow, Threatens Hearing" (17 June 2008).

3. Indiscriminate Self-medication : In many developing countries, especially Nigeria, because people are wary of paying high fees to see the physician for proper diagnosis, they tend to self-medicate in the hope that they might save money, and by some stroke of luck, get cured.

Over time, they get used to this habit, which leads to the syndrome of a "pill for every ill" as it was described by Dr Peter Alberti in an article titled "Action call to halt antibiotic-induced hearing loss". In adults, hearing loss resulting from doing this is due to some drugs which are "ototoxic - in other words, they are damaging to the ear. Drugs known to be ototoxic include antibiotics like streptomycin and neomycin, aspirin etc.

According to experts in the field, the problem of hearing loss caused by antibiotics misuse is getting more widespread.

4. Diseases/Infections: Do you have the habit of putting objects into your ear when you feel itching or just to clean it out? Well, you might want to stop doing that especially as you could pick up ear infections, develop diseases or even damage the ear.

Having said that, other diseases do occur without one doing the foregoing.

For instance in children, Otitis media can be quite common. It is caused by fluid accumulating behind the ear drum, failing to drain from the "Eustachian tube" (a small passage which connects the ear to the nose). This provides opportunity for bacteria from the nasal passages to enter this fluid and cause an ear infection. The foregoing explains why Otitis Media often occurs following (or in the course) of an attack of cold since during this period, the child’s nose is typically congested.

The results is that the child hears speech as muffled or inaudible when this infection sets in, because the fluid prevents proper transmission of the speech sounds to the inner ear (making this a conductive type of hearing loss). This type of hearing loss is however often temporary but if it happens repeatedly, damage to the eardrum and other inner ear parts can lead to permanent (sensorineural) hearing loss.

5. Ear Canal Blockage: Blockage of the ear canal can lead to loss. The ear canal can be blocked by earwax, or what is also known as cerumen. This kind of blockage is common and often easily cured by having a doctor remove the wax (using special equipment or even by simply flushing with water).

You can also do it yourself, if you have access to some of the available over-the-counter wax control mixtures meant for use at home. Reports however suggest that these do-it-yourself preparations may lead to external ear infections.

Infections that are accompanied by swelling that blocks the canal, resulting in hearing loss can also occur. The ear would typically detect sounds clearly or without distortion, but at a lower volume. Other blockages can be caused by damage/injury to the inner ear (e.g. due to poking sharp objects when itching is felt); or even tumors/growth in the ear.

Age

Many people simply assume aging logically leads to some loss overtime. But research studies across cultures/societies suggest otherwise.

According to Dr. John A. McDougall in his book, "The McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart", people in the third world, demonstrate sounder hearing at 70 years than the average American does at 20 years. He explains that these third world residents grow old with virtually all of their senses intact, while their counterparts in developed societies often need to wear hearing aids and recommended glasses with advancement in age.

The key appears to be the relatively high fat diet of the latter group. Comparisons of people in Wisconsin, USA, with African tribesmen called Maabans, reveal 1ff8 ed that none of the Africans was diagnosed with any hearing loss like those suffered by many residents of the dairy producing Wisconsin. Children in Finland (where high fast diets are common) were found to have hearing loss as early as the age of ten (10) years, while Yugoslavians (who eat much lower cholesterol levels) show no such losses. In summing up, Dr. McDougall points out that it is the same way that fat blocks arteries supplying the brain and heart, that vessels which serve the inner ear also get progressively blocked, making the ear become less sensitive to sound.

What can you take away from the above? Well, the simple message is that you NEED to eat healthy foods - so that you can stand a better chance of preventing hearing loss right into your grey years!

NEW IDEAS: Can Vitamins and Minerals Prevent Hearing Loss?

And here is one more interesting thought to take away. On Mar 29, 2007 in Science Daily, a report was published about a "candy bar" that supposedly prevents hearing damage through its supply of vitamins and minerals to the "chewer". It was discussed in relation to the challenge faced by soldiers who on the one hand would love to protect their ears from the damaging noise of battle by wearing ear plugs, but are on the other hand unable to do so because using ear plugs would make them less "sound" aware of their environment, making them vulnerable to enemy "stealth" attacks.

Guest article writer today a little off our usual topic of tinnitus related material but a very interesting article we thought we would share with you:

The benefits of binaural hearing are many. Listening to binaural sounds can bring aperson to many desirable states. This article will point out 5 of the main ones.

Incredible energy - About half an hour just relaxing with your headphones has been shown to bring increased energy. For those who don’t rest well, it can have the effect of 3 hours worth of sleep.

Unleashed Creativity - This is great for project teams, child care workers or, heck, even writers like me!

Better Focus - It can help you get more work done in a few hours than others get done in days. Just listen to your binaural sounds in the background at work, study or home. Wonderful for students who have that big exam tomorrow and desperately need to concentrate!

Increased memory - Binaural sounds will move you to the frequency needed to induce your capability to recall information better. Some people report, after a 60 minute listening session, that they can remember more than they have in years.

Mental Refresher - 10 minutes of listening can help you relax and refresh your mind.

There is also a benefit that is a bit controversial. Binaural sounds have been called a "digital drug". The reason for this nickname is because in some recent studies, binaural sounds have produced the effects of drugs and alcohol in the test subjects. This use seems to be safe as there is no known side effects and there’s no "crash" or "hangover" when the binaural effect wears off. There is the opinion that "wouldn’t it be great tofeel drunk without the alcohol or feel high without the use of illegal drugs?". Others are against it; thus, the controversy.

The benefits of binaural hearing are under rated. Think how great it would be to feel better just by listening to some sounds on your headphones. I hope this article helped you understand some of the wonderful things binaural hearing can offer. Thanks for reading!

Osha Work Related Hearing Loss

The work place is one of the locations for the cause of hearing loss and cause of tinnitus. Even though individuals take some precautions they often do not take enough. Employers at places that have the circumstances of a threat to the hearing health of the workers must take special precautions to see to it that workers are protected to a certain standard. Guest article writer takes it from there:

One of the occupational hazards of life in the modern industrial age is exposure to noise, both inside and outside the workplace. Acoustic noise can be defined as unwanted sound and loud sounds of 80 decibels (dB) are considered potentially hazardous. According to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), more than 30 million Americans are regularly exposed to dangerous levels of sound. According to the EPA the number of people exposed to damage induced by noise is about 9 million.

The noise is considered a necessary evil and insidious effects of exposure above acceptable levels are generally not effective, especially since there are no visible effects. The main effect of excess noise is hearing loss, whether temporary or permanent, depending on the level and duration of exposure. What is even less known side effects ranging from sleep disorders: stress and fatigue, irritability, annoyance and lack of concentration. Noise-induced lack of attention and consequent loss of effectiveness are of primary concern in the workplace. It is not only affected productivity, but the chances of accidents, which affect workers and job security are also increasing.

Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has developed standards for acceptable threshold limits of noise in the workplace and the mitigation of excessive noise. 29 CFR 1910.95 standards occupational noise exposure, sets permissible exposure limits for different durations of exposure. Recommend the level of exposure, according to the rule, is 85 dB A in an 8-hour time weighted average (TWA) basis. If this limit is exceeded, feasible engineering or administrative controls must be used. If these controls to reduce sound levels within the limits of exposure, personal protective equipment (PPE) is to be provided. Moreover, regardless of the reduction of exposure to noise of 85 dB A or down to the use of PPE, the employer is implementing a program for protection of hearing loss.

The rule refers to 1910.95 mandate hearing protection program as the "Hearing Conservation Program." This program has five parts operational mandate: (1) Noise Monitoring (2) Evidence of audiometry (3) training for employees (4) hearing protectors and (5) Maintenance of records.

Noise monitoring
Sound levels in the workplace should be measured to determine which employees to include in the agenda, the need for hearing protection equipment and its suitability.

Audiometry test
All employees in the program should be a baseline to determine existing audiometric hearing loss, if any. Annual tests will be conducted later to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and the appropriate corrective action as necessary. The rule requires that audiometric tests are carried out by suitably qualified personnel, under the supervision of an audiologist or ENT doctor.

Employee training
All employees in the program should receive annual training on the effects of noise on hearing, hearing protection devices and purpose of audiometric testing.

Hearing protectors
Hearing protection devices must be accessible to all employees in the program.

Record Keeping
Records of worker exposure (measurement noise), acoustic or exhaustive calibration audiometer and audiometric records should be updated. These records will be kept for specific periods of time.

Experience has shown that effective programs for the protection of hearing loss are universally beneficial and that both the employer and employees can benefit from the programs. Employees are protected against hearing loss, fatigue and general weakness. The employer benefits from improved productivity and employee morale and enjoy medical workers and reducing compensation costs.

We have touched on excessive exposure to high levels of noise especially over a period of time. I think you might be surprised at how easily your life will get you into a hearing damaging circumstance. Fortunately much of this exposure to excessive noise will cause problems that fade in time once the source of the noise is removed. Below are some examples of potentially dangerous any day if not everyday exposures to the kind of noise we are talking about. I got these from a simple poll of my own family which includes a couple of high school and a college student. These exposures were experienced in just the last ten days. After you read the exposures that a poll of my own family from just the last month of their lives revealed I hope you will remember to avoid such risks and they will too.

high school rally for the basketball team

the game itself

a party at a friend’s house

attendance at a muscle car exhibition

several rides on the NYC subway system

I am sure that if you sit with your family you could come up with a list of your own in no time.

Add to this that many have exposures like these added to a work environment that is excessively noisy and you have a lot of chances for damage to people’s auditory systems. If you are suffering anew from ringing on the ears from noise induced tinnitus do what you can to give the delicate instruments in your hearing system a rest from the assault.

In the event that this is the type of thing you may be experiencing your condition from I thought it might it would be helpful to let you have some information regarding cochlea damaged tinnitus resulting mostly from exposure to excessive or persistent noise.

I hope this gives you some insight into what actually happens when cochlea damage occurs as a result of exposure to noise.

There is a vast number of microscopic sensory hair cells in the the Organ of Corti these hair are very fragile indeed and are easily damaged. In addition to these delicate hairs there are three tiny bones that vibrate and act as amplifiers, these amplifiers do a remarkable job when they are not under assault by excessive noise.

When the movement of the tiny bones in the middle ear vibrate the oval window of the cochlea, there are waves that are then created in the fluid surrounding the cochlea. These sound waves bend the basilar membrane in place corresponding to specific frequencies.

The hair cells in those places then brush against the overlying membrane causing the generation an pulse. It is this pulse which gets sent to the brain. The brain interprets those electrical pulses as sound.

When the tiny hairs and nerve endings become damaged as a result of exposure to excessive noise, high frequency hearing loss and tinnitus often results. So the obvious first line of defense limit the noise.
